Fatal Pedestrian Crash Claims The Life of A Mississippi Man

Lafourche- On September 8, 2011, at approximately 3:08 a.m., Troop C investigated a hit and run fatal crash on LA 1 in the St. Charles Community south of Thibodaux, LA. The crash claimed the life of a 23-year-old Mississippi man.

The preliminary investigation reveals that pedestrian, Derek J. Rivere, (W/M, 23, of Mount Olive, MS) was apparently lying in the southbound lane of LA 1 prior to being struck by the initial hit and run vehicle. Warren A. Hebert Jr. (W/M, 39, of Raceland, LA) was operating a 2007 Chevrolet Impala southbound on LA 1. Hebert attempted to avoid Rivere, but was unable and partially struck Rivere’s lower extremities. Hebert and a witness, Ernest P. Boudreaux (W/M, 58, of Thibodaux, LA) stopped and attempted to warn other motorist about the crash to no avail. Two other unknown vehicles also unable to avoid struck Rivere and continued southbound on LA 1. Rivere received fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office.

There was no detectable indication of alcohol and/or drug involvement on the part of Hebert. Blood was drawn from Rivere and toxicology results are pending from the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office.

No charges have been filed and Troopers are continuing their investigation. If you have any information in regards to this crash, you are asked to contact Troop C at 985.857.3680.
