Troop C Urges Preparation and Safety during this Hurricane Season

Gray- Louisiana State Police Troop C wants to remind everyone make sure to be prepared for the 2011 Hurricane Season which starts June 1, 2011 and ends November 30, 2011.

Know what a hurricane watch, warning, and storm surge means:
Hurricane Watch: conditions are possible in the specified area of the watch, usually within 48 hours.
Hurricane Warning: conditions are expected in the specified area of the warning, usually within 36 hours.
Storm Surge: An abnormal rise of the water along a shore as the result, primarily, of the winds from a storm.

Steps to Prepare for Hurricanes:
1) Make a visual record of your home and possessions. Use a digital camera and/or video recorder. This will help establish your claim after a loss.
2) Place copies of your insurance policies, family medical information, and important documents such as deeds and wills in a safe deposit box or safe.
3) Carefully review your insurance coverage in advance of a hurricane.
4) Listen and/or monitor the local media in your area for storms and/or hurricane updates.
5) Make a list of supplies that you will need in the event of a hurricane and pack them ahead of time. (DO NOT WAIT)!!!
6) Inspect and/or perform maintenance on your vehicle(s), trailers, generators, etc.
7) Pickup and secure items around your home.
8) Make plans for your pets.
9) HAVE A PLAN FOR EVACUATING!!!!!!!!

Note: Identify ahead of time where you will go if you are told to evacuate (choose several options). Make sure your vehicle has been properly inspected and/or serviced for such a trip. Monitor the National Weather Service, Local Radio and TV stations for evacuation instructions. Remember Contraflow should be used as a last resort if you plan to evacuate. If you are advised to evacuate, do so IMMEDIATELY!!!!!
