Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: June 27, 2010 Pipe Bombs Found During An Investigation Of A Vehicle Crash in Lafourche Parish Lafourche – On Monday, June 27, 2011, at approximately 7:27 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a single vehicle crash on LA 308 south of McCloud Road in Lockport, LA. During the investigation, 12 explosive devices were located at the scene of the crash. Tony A. Barisich (W/M, 53 of Terrytown, LA) was operating a 1998 GMC pickup southbound on LA 308 in Lockport, LA. Barisich failed to negotiate a right bank curve and ran off the roadway to the right, striking the bridge guardrail. His vehicle then overturned and came to rest in a drainage ditch. As troopers were conducting their investigation, 12 explosive devices were located, 10 were homemade pipe bombs and 2 were legally bought firework devices. A perimeter was established around the scene and Louisiana State Police Emergency Services, Region I Criminal Investigative Division’s Houma Office, and Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms were notified of the incident. Traffic was diverted onto LA 1 from LA 308 at the Bellevue Bridge and East Fontinelle Road in Lockport, LA. LA 308 near the scene was closed for approximately 8 hours. Investigators retrieved and detonated the explosive devices in an empty cane field near the crash site in order to render them safe. Preliminary investigation revealed that Barisich was not intending to use the devices maliciously, but for entertainment purposes. Barisich received moderate injuries and was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center by Air Med. A seat belt was worn by Barisich. Alcohol and/or drug usage is not a factor in the crash. Barisich was charged with careless operation in the crash. In the criminal investigation, Barisich will be charged upon release from the hospital with the following charges: 10 counts of manufacture and possession of a bomb, 1 count of possession of explosives without a license, 1 count of reckless use of explosives, and 1 count of unlawful storage of explosives. No bond has been set. The crash investigation is complete; however, state police detectives and A.T.F. are continuing their investigation. Safety Tips: Use common sense. Obey laws when handling fireworks. Only use fireworks as intended. Don’t try to alter them or combine fireworks. Do not use homemade fireworks of illegal explosives!! Report illegal explosives to the law enforcement.
