TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE Date: November 23, 2010
Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend: Click It or Ticket
The Thanksgiving holidays brings families together across the state and across the country. It is one of the busiest traveled holidays of the year. In response, the Louisiana State Police will have increased number of troopers on patrol this weekend working to keep motorist safe. This extra allocation of manpower is made possible by overtime funds provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. In 2009, 65% of drivers killed in Louisiana were not wearing a seat belt. “Sadly, the holidays which for many are the happiest time of the year, is also one of the deadliest and most tragic,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. Louisiana State Police Troop C would like to remind everyone to be responsive by staying sober, getting proper rest, and making sure everyone is properly restrained before beginning your journey to your destination. Louisiana law requires all occupants in the vehicle to be properly restrained regardless of their age or seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be tolerated and those offenders will be arrested for DWI. Troopers will also be issuing citations for hazardous violations, such as following too closely, speeding, and careless operation. Troopers will also focus on other hazardous violations. Louisiana State Police suggests several driving tips while making the long or short drive to your destination. First, ensure that your vehicle is inspected by a qualified mechanic; to insure your vehicle is in good working order. Have your tire pressure, engine fluids, brakes and lights checked. Second, make sure you have enough fuel in your gas tank to take you to your destination. Third, if you plan on driving for more than two hours, take frequent breaks. This allows you time to stretch and prevents you from getting sleepy while driving. Fourth, take your time (plan ahead). We want everyone to reach their destination safely; there is no need to rush. Buckle up Louisiana. Every trip. Every time. This is a community effort, so we are asking for your help. If anyone observes unsafe or impaired driving, please call *LSP (*577) on a cellular phone or contact your local law enforcement agency. Captain Darrin Naquin, and the men and women of the Louisiana State Police Troop C would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
