Troop C Participates in National Teen Driver Safety Week

Troop C – Motorists hitting the road October 17-23, 2010, need to remember and wear their seat belts or face the consequences. Louisiana State Police Troop C will be out making sure everyone is buckling up, especially teens.

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission reports, that teen drivers and passengers have not embraced the message about the importance of wearing a seat belt. Louisiana statistics show for the years 2003 to 2008, 73 percent of teen passenger vehicle occupants, ages 16-20, killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Had all these teens been wearing their seat belts, as many as half of them would have survived.

Troopers will focus their attention on impaired and distracted driving as well. “Distractions in the vehicle, such as cell phones, texting and passengers, can lead to deadly crashes,” Captain Darrin Naquin, Commander of Troop C said. “Our teens need to know that driving is a big responsibility and not a game. When operating a vehicle their full attention needs to be directed on the road.”

“There is nothing more tragic than a parent losing their son or daughter in a preventable motor vehicle crash. We need to help ensure that our children remain safe and keep coming home, night after night,” said Captain Darrin Naquin.

Louisiana State Police Troop C will be participating in the National Safety Weekend October 23-24, 2010, at the Southland Mall in Houma, LA. We will emphasize on seat belt and child restraint usage. Sears is the sponsor of the event. Other area safety advocates will also be participating in the event.

Our message to teens is simple: buckle up, drive sober and avoid all distractions. If you see an unsafe driving situation and/or an impaired driver, please call the Louisiana State Police at *LSP (*577) from your cell phone.
