Single Vehicle Crash Involves Hazardous Material in Assumption Parish
Assumption- On Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop C with the assistance of the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office closed LA 662 at LA 398 and U.S. 90 to investigate a single vehicle crash on LA 662 near Tuboscope. The crash involved an 18-wheeler carrying Liquid Oxygen.

Johnny D. Carter (W/M, 42 of Baton Rouge, LA) was operating a 2011 Freightliner with a trailer belonging to Air Liquide of Geismars, LA. Carter was southbound on LA 662 and failed to negotiate a left bank curve, ran off of the roadway to right which caused the truck and trailer to roll over onto its passenger side. The trailer contained approximately 4,600 gallons of Liquid Oxygen at the time of the crash. As a precaution, one section of Tuboscope near the scene was evacuated. Troop C was assisted by the Louisiana State Police Emergency Services Section with the investigation. The roadway was closed at 11:00 a.m. and re-opened at 5:35 p.m.

Carter was wearing his seat belt and received minor injuries. Carter was transported to the Teche Hospital where he was treated and released.

Alcohol and/or drug usage is not a factor in the crash. Carter was charged with Careless Handling of Hazardous Material. Troopers are continuing their investigation.
