| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: December 22, 2010 Troop C’s Zero for December Campaign Gray- Louisiana State Police Troop C and the Safe Community Partnership reminds everyone that the holiday season can be one of the deadliest and most dangerous times on America’s roadways due to an increase in traffic volume and impaired drivers. No one is immune from impaired drivers. On Friday, November 25, 2010 at approximately 2:23a.m., Troop C investigated a crash involving one of their own. Trooper Leeman Howard stopped a southbound violator on LA 1 in Thibodaux for speeding and while on the stop, was struck by a 2000 GMC Yukon driven by Juan Diaz (O/M, 27 of Thibodaux, LA). The impact caused Trooper Howard’s unit to strike the 2009 GMC pickup he had previously stopped for speeding. Diaz attempted to leave the scene by driving through an open field adjacent to the crash. Diaz’s vehicle became stuck and although injured, Trooper Howard was able to apprehend Diaz. Upon his release from Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, Diaz was transported and booked at the Lafourche Detention Center. Diaz was booked for the following charges: DWI 2nd, reckless operation, hit and run, illegal operation of a vehicle by a nonresident citizen, vehicular negligent injury, resisting arrest, driving without a driver’s license, and an open container violation. The State Police unit involved in this crash will be displayed in front of Troop C in Gray, LA. This display will serve as a reminder, “No one is immune from impaired drivers”. Troop C troopers will be out in full force this holiday season to ensure the safety of everyone traveling to and from their destinations. Troop C has implemented the Zero for December campaign and the “No refusal” program this holiday season. This will be done in the hopes of preventing serious and/or fatal crashes, which are caused by impaired drivers. Please join Troop C in our efforts to make this an enjoyable holiday season for everyone. This can be accomplished by practicing the following: Inspect your vehicle before traveling, Give yourself extra time when traveling, Drive defensively, Make sure everyone in your vehicle is properly seat belted, Obey the posted speed limits, Don’t follow too close, and Don’t drive impaired. If you observe unsafe driving you can call *LSP or (*577) it’s a toll free call. Troop C and surrounding law enforcement agencies will be conducting DWI Checkpoints and saturation patrols during this holiday season in locations within the Troop C area. Troop C will also be conducting Nighttime Seat Belt Checkpoints throughout the Troop C area. Your best policy is to always insist on having a designated driver at all times. Remember that troopers have no discretion when incidents involve impaired driving. You will go directly to jail, NO EXCEPTIONS! On behalf of the Louisiana State Police Troop C we want to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season.
