Impaired Driver Causes Crash, Young Woman Killed

Houma – Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a fatal crash in Terrebonne Parish shortly before 2:30 am this morning. The crash, which claimed the life of a young Houma woman, occurred on Savanne Road between LA 182 and LA 311.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Ford pickup, driven by Stephen Murphy (W/M, age 18) of Houma, was traveling west on Savanne Road when it entered a left curve. The pickup ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a brick mailbox, continued west as it struck a ditch, and overturned, coming to rest on its roof. Murphy sustained minor injuries in the crash. Murphy’s passenger, Amanda Doyle (W/F, age 18) of Houma, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Doyle deceased on the scene.

Troopers arrested Murphy and booked him into the Terrebonne Parish Correctional Center on charges of vehicular homicide, reckless operation, and possession of alcoholic beverages (under 21 years old). Murphy submitted a breath sample to Troopers, which showed his blood alcohol concentration was more than two times the legal limit for someone over 21 years old.

If convicted of the charge of vehicular homicide, Murphy faces up to thirty years in prison. Troopers would like to remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. This is the second fatal crash in two days where an impaired driver was the cause of the crash. Historically, fatal and serious injury crashes caused by impaired drivers increases at this time of year. Troopers have been working very hard through an aggressive campaign of education and enforcement to stop impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement. You can help save lives in the fight against impaired driving by getting involved and following a few very simple rules – 1. NEVER drive impaired. 2. NEVER get into a vehicle with an impaired driver. 3. NEVER allow an impaired person to get behind the wheel. 4. ALWAYS wear a seat belt, regardless of seating position.

Troopers are faced with the daunting task of notifying loved ones of their loss whenever a fatal crash occurs. This grim responsibility becomes even more difficult during the holiday season. Please consider safety, responsibility, and the lives of others before making the foolish decision to drive impaired. There are too many simple alternatives to impaired driving.
