Motorcyclist Dies After Crash On LA 1 In Lafourche Parish

Raceland, LA- Shortly before 1 PM this afternoon, a motorcyclist died at the hospital after he struck a vehicle on LA 1 in Lafourche Parish.

The investigation revealed that a 2007 Honda Goldwing was traveling south on LA 1 just north of Raceland, LA. The Honda was being driven by Leo Robinson (B/M age 69) of Raceland, LA. As Robinson traveled south on LA 1, he came upon a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am stopped on the southbound shoulder of LA 1. The Grand Am was being driven by Nelma Naquin (W/F, age 74) of Thibodaux, LA. When Robinson approached the Grand Am, Naquin pulled from the shoulder in an attempt to make a u-turn. In doing so, Naquin failed to yield and blocked the path of Robinson's motorcycle with her car. Robinson attempted to take an evasive action by veering left, braking, and allowing the motorcycle to fall to the ground. However, Robinson's motorcycle continued forward and struck Naquin's vehicle in the driver's side door. Upon impact, Robinson fell to the ground and became trapped under his motorcycle as it came to rest against the Grand Am. Naquin was transported to St. Anne Hospital in Raceland with minor injuries. Robinson, who was wearing a US D.O.T. helmet, was transported to Thibodaux Regional Hospital where he later died.

Alcohol and speed are not suspected to be factors in the crash. Blood was taken from both drivers and the test results are pending. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists to always check to make sure it is clear before entering a roadway from a parked position. Motorists should also make u-turns where it is safe and legal to do so. Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seatbelts decrease your risk of serious injury or death.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
