TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE December 14, 2012 Animal In The Road Leads To The Death Of A Vacherie Man Vacherie, LA- Shortly before 9 am this morning, a pedestrian was struck and killed on LA 20 near LA 644 in St. James Parish as he tried to retrieve his dog. The investigation revealed that a 1999 International truck was traveling south on LA 20. The International was being driven by Jerold Washington (B/M age 26) of Gonzales, LA. A 2002 Mack truck was also traveling south on LA 20 ahead of the International. The Mack was being driven by Aaron August (B/M age 38) of Marrero, LA. Due to a dog in the road, the Mack truck came to a stop in the southbound lane of LA 20. The International truck attempted to avoid the Mack truck and crossed the center line into the northbound lane of LA 20. The International struck a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado that was stopped in the northbound lane of LA 20 because of the animal in the roadway. The Silverado was being driven by Steven Wall (W/M age 60) of Thibodaux, LA. The International continued to travel and struck a pedestrian and a 2004 Nissan Titan that was parked on the northbound shoulder of LA 20. The pedestrian, Gaspard Brazan (W/M age 62) of Vacherie, LA, was the owner of the Nissan Titan and the animal. Brazan had parked his vehicle on the shoulder of the roadway in order to retrieve the animal that had been missing. Brazan was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. James Parish Coroner’s Office. Washington was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with minor injuries. Wall, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Thibodaux Regional with minor injuries. August was not injured in the crash. Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from Washington and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Brazan. August and Wall submitted to breath tests and were cleared of any alcohol involvement. This crash remains under investigation.
