Raceland Woman Dies In Head On Crash In Lafourche Parish

Lockport, LA- Shortly before 8 PM yesterday evening, a 24 year old Raceland woman was tragically killed in a head on crash after a vehicle attempted to pass in a no passing zone on LA 1 just south of Lockport.

The investigation revealed that a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling south on LA 1 just south of Lockport. The Silverado was being driven by Jon Mollohan (W/M age 43) of Magnolia, TX. The Silverado entered the northbound lane of LA 1 and attempted to pass two vehicles in a no passing zone while in a slight curve in the roadway. A 2001 Ford F-150 was traveling north on LA 1 at the same time that Mollohan was attempting to pass. The Ford F-150 was being driven by Dustin Pitre (W/M age 22) of Raceland, LA. Pitre first attempted to avoid the Silverado by steering to the right, but then steered back to the left and entered the southbound lane of LA 1. Both vehicles struck head on in the southbound lane of LA 1. Mollohan, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Ochsner St. Anne Hospital with moderate injuries. Brenda Thompson (W/F age 44) of Houston, TX, was a passenger in the Silverado and was transported to Ochner St. Anne Hospital with moderate injuries. Thompson was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Pitre, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Ochsner St. Anne Hospital with minor injuries. Rebecca Cooper (W/F age 24) of Raceland, LA, was a passenger in the F-150 and was flown to University Hospital in New Orleans. Cooper, who was wearing a seat belt, later died at the Hospital from her injuries.

Alcohol use is not suspect to be factor in the crash. Blood was taken from both drivers and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists to always use caution when passing another vehicle. Never pass another vehicle in an area where there is a solid no passing line indicated on the roadway. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
