Bicyclist Killed in Fatality Crash on LA 308

Raceland, LA- Shortly after 8 PM yesterday evening, a bicyclist was killed on LA 308 in Lafourche Parish after he was struck from the rear by a vehicle.

The investigation revealed that a bicycle was traveling south on LA 308 just north of Raceland Junior High School in a section of roadway without street lights. The bicycle was being operated by Sergio Sumano-Ortega (O/M age 17) of Raceland, LA. As the bicycle was traveling south on LA 308, it was struck from the rear by a 2008 Ford F-150 traveling south on LA 308. The F-150 was being driven by Andre Leblanc (W/M age 48) of Raceland, LA. After the initial impact, the bicyclist was ejected onto the roadway where he was then struck by the F-150. Sumano-Ortega was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Leblanc, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash. The bicycle involved in the crash did not have any kind of illuminated devices on the bicycle.

Alcohol use is unknown at this time. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Sumano-Ortego. Leblanc submitted to a breath test and was cleared of any alcohol involvement. This crash remains under investigation.


According to Louisiana State Law, bicycles must travel in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic laws. Bicycles must also have a lamp mounted on the front that shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front. They shall also have a lamp mounted on the rear that will emit either a flashing or steady red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear. Remember to wear bright and reflective clothing when walking or bicycling at night.



Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
