TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

December 21, 2011

***UPDATE***

Earlier this evening, Troop C was notified that Allen Reed succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash on LA 308 and was pronounced dead at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center.

Motorcyclist Seriously Injured In Crash During Pursuit

Shortly before 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, Louisiana State Police Troopers began investigating a motorcycle crash on LA 308 south of Thibodaux in Lafourche Parish.

According to the investigating Troopers, a motorcycle was traveling northbound on LA 308 when a Trooper observed the motorcycle speeding at 77 mph in a 55 mph zone. The Trooper attempted to stop the motorcycle, but quickly lost sight once the driver increased his speed forcing the Trooper to terminate the pursuit in the best interest of public safety. As the Trooper continued patrolling the area, he noticed the same motorcycle enter LA 308 from a cane field road. When the motorcyclist noticed the Trooper, he continued south on LA 308 and increased his speed to over 100 mph. While on LA 308 the motorcyclist failed to negotiate a hard right hand curve and steered off the roadway crashing his motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle, identified as 23-year-old Allen Reed from Galliano, LA, was ejected from his bike as a result of the crash. Although Mr. Reed was wearing a US D.O.T. approved helmet, he sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center.

Investigating Troopers report that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists that driving at high speeds is dangerous, and often leads to serious injuries or death in motor vehicle crashes. Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seatbelts decrease your risk of serious injury or death. If you are pulled over by a police officer, remember to slow down and pull onto the right shoulder of the roadway or a safe location.
