Montegut Man Dies from Injuries Sustained in Crash

Bourg, LA- A Montegut man died yesterday afternoon from injuries he sustained in a crash on the morning of May 5, 2013, when his vehicle struck a tree limb after avoiding a Golf Cart in the road.

The investigation revealed that an E-Z- Go Golf Cart was traveling north in the northbound lane of LA 24 in front of the address of 4241 LA 24 in Bourg, LA. The Golf Cart was being operated by Katelyn Duplantis (W/F age 18) of Chauvin, LA. A 2003 Oldsmobile Bravado was traveling north on LA 24 approaching the address of 4241 LA 24. The Bravado was being driven by Cleveland Towns (W/M age 63) of Montegut, LA. As the Bravado approached the Golf Cart it swerved to the left to avoid striking the Golf Cart. The Bravado traveled off the road to the left and struck an oak tree limb. The tree limb impacted the windshield and roof of the Bravado. Duplantis was not injured in the crash. Towns, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Terrebonne General Hospital for treatment. Towns was later transported to University Hospital in New Orleans where he died yesterday afternoon due to the injuries he sustained in the crash. The passenger in the Bravado, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash.

Duplantis submitted to a breath test and was found to be over the legal limit of 0.02g% for someone under the age of 21, as well as above the legal limit of 0.08g% for someone 21 and older. Blood was taken from Towns and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind everyone to remain safe on the roads, and not to operate any form of transportation under the influence of alcohol. Off-road vehicles can be dangerous hazards on the roadway. Off-road vehicles such as golf carts, four-wheelers, and lawn mowers do not have the necessary safety or warning equipment to be traveling on the roads. Without the proper safety equipment such as headlights, taillights, brake lights and other street legal equipment, off-road vehicles can pose serious hazards on the roadway, especially in night time situations. Owners of off-road vehicles, if they want to travel on the roads safely, can spend the extra money to convert their non-street legal vehicle into a street legal vehicle as long as it meets all the state requirements.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
