TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE August 19, 2013 Driver Arrested in LA 20 Hit and Run Fatality Crash Schriever, LA- Shortly after 8 PM yesterday evening, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a hit and run vehicle as she walked on the shoulder of LA 20 in Terrebonne Parish. The driver of the hit and run vehicle was later arrested after she returned to the scene to turn herself in. The investigation revealed that a 2013 Kia Sorrento was traveling east on LA 20 near Back Project Road. The Sorrento was being driven by Sandy Carlisle (W/F age 40) of Schriever, LA. As the Sorrento traveled east on LA 20, it drifted onto the right shoulder and struck a pedestrian that was walking on the shoulder. The pedestrian was later identified as Taja Winston (B/F age 24) of Schriever, LA. After striking the pedestrian, the Sorrento continued east on LA 20 and fled the scene of the crash. Winston was pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Carlisle later returned to the scene of the crash and turned herself in. Carlisle, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash. Alcohol is not a factor in the crash. Carlisle submitted to a breath test and no alcohol was detected. Carlisle was arrested and charged with Hit and Run Driving, and Improper Lane Usage. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Winston. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind everyone to remain safe on the roads and never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you have had any alcoholic beverages. Pedestrians should always be aware of their surroundings and make sure to cross intersections and streets when it’s safe to do so. Remember to wear bright and reflective clothing when walking or bicycling at night.
