Vacherie Woman Later Dies at Hospital from Injuries Sustained in Broadside Crash

Vacherie, LA- Shortly after 11:20 AM this morning, Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a two vehicle crash on LA 20 in St. James Parish where a 70 year old woman later died at East St. James Hospital from her injuries sustained in the crash.

The investigation revealed that a 2008 Ford F-250 was traveling west on LA 20 in Vacherie, LA. The F-250 was being driven by Kirk Melancon (W/M age 52) of Vacherie, LA. At the same time that the F-250 was traveling west on LA 20, a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier failed to yield as it exited a parking lot and attempted to make a left turn onto LA 20. The Cavalier was struck broadside by the F-250. The Cavalier was being driven by Virgia Folse (W/F age 70) of Vacherie, LA. Folse, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to East St. James Hospital where she later died from her injuries. Melancon, who was wearing a seat belt, received minor injuries in the crash and was transported to Thibodaux Regional Hospital.

Investigating Troopers report that alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from Melancon and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Folse and this crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists to always be aware of their surroundings and avoid distractions while driving. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
