TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE October 23, 2015 Baker Man Dies in Head-on Crash in West Feliciana Parish St. Francisville, LA – Shortly before 12:00 pm on October 23, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash that occurred on US 61 south of LA 66 in West Feliciana Parish. The crash took the life of 62 year old Gary Mitchel of Baker, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Mitchell was traveling southbound on US 61 in a 1999 Buick Century. At the same time, 68 year old Clifton Lampton of St. Francisville, LA was traveling northbound on US 61 in a 2002 Kia Sedona. For unknown reasons, Mitchell’s vehicle crossed the center turn lane into the northbound lane of US 61 and struck Lampton’s vehicle head-on. Mitchell was transported to the West Feliciana Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Lampton and his passenger were properly restrained and received moderate injuries as a result of the crash. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample was taken from Lampton and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Toxicology results for Mitchell are pending an autopsy. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers want to inform motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
