Passenger Dies from Injuries Sustained in April Crash

Galliano, LA- A Raceland woman died over the weekend from injuries she sustained in a crash on the evening of April 27, 2013, when the vehicle she was riding in struck another vehicle head-on.

The investigation revealed that a 2004 Jeep Laredo was traveling south on LA 1 in Galliano, LA, shortly before 10 PM. The Laredo was being driven by Brandon Cheramie (W/M age 31) of Galliano, LA. A 2001 Buick LeSabre was traveling north on LA 1 approaching the Laredo. The LeSabre was being driven by Benjamin Sanchez (W/M age 31) of Galliano, LA. The two vehicles struck head-on in the southbound lane of LA 1. This crash is still under investigation. Cheramie, who was wearing a seat belt, received minor injuries and refused treatment. Sanchez, who was wearing a seat belt, received moderate injuries and was transported to Lady of the Sea Hospital. The passenger in the LeSabre, Jeneva Billiot (W/F age 24) of Raceland, LA, received critical injuries and was transported to Lady of the Sea Hospital. Billiot was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Billiot was later transported to University Hospital in New Orleans where she died over the weekend due to the injuries she sustained in the crash.

Cheramie submitted to a breath test and was found to be above the legal limit of 0.08g%, and was arrested for DWI. Sanchez submitted a blood sample and was cleared of any alcohol involvement.

Troopers remind everyone to remain safe on the roads and never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you have had any alcoholic beverages. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
