TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE July 5, 2013 Houma Man Dies in Early Morning Crash Houma, LA- Shortly before 2:30am this morning, Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a single vehicle crash on LA 311 near the Westside Blvd. Extension Bridge where a Houma man was killed after his vehicle went in the water. The investigation revealed that a 2010 Land Rover was traveling north on LA 311 in Terrebonne Parish. The Land Rover was being driven by Rory Lyons (B/M age 41) of Houma, LA. As the Land Rover traveled north at a high rate of speed, the vehicle entered a slight left curve in the roadway as it approached the Westside Blvd. Extension Bridge intersection. The vehicle failed to negotiate the curve and traveled off the right side of the roadway where it traveled over 1,000 feet before striking the south guardrail of the Westside Blvd. Extension Bridge. Upon impact, the vehicle became airborne and traveled over the roadway and north guardrail. The vehicle landed in a large drainage canal which runs parallel to LA 311. Lyons’ body was later discovered by the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol after the empty Land Rover was pulled out of the Canal. Lyons was pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. It is unknown if Lyons was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. After an extensive search, no other occupants were found. Alcohol use is unknown at this time and routine toxicology tests are pending. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind everyone to remain safe on the roads and never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you have had any alcoholic beverages. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police. Contact Information: Tfc.
