One Killed and Six Injured on LA 3235 in Lafourche Parish

Larose, LA- Around 11:30 am yesterday, a Gretna woman was killed and six more injured in a crash at the intersection of LA 3235 and LA 657 in Lafourche Parish.

The investigation revealed that a 2005 Nissan Frontier was traveling west on LA 657 approaching the LA 3235 intersection. The Frontier was being driven by Carin Penida-Ruiz (O/M age 42) of Gretna, LA. The Frontier stopped at the intersection and then attempted to cross the northbound lanes of LA 3235. A 2001 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck was traveling north on LA 3235 at the same time that the Frontier was attempting to cross the intersection. The Chevrolet was being driven by Troy Griffin Jr. (W/M age 22) of Golden Meadow, LA. The frontier was struck on the driver’s side, causing the vehicle to rotate off the roadway where it struck a utility pole before coming to rest on its side. The driver of the Frontier and four other passengers were transported to local hospitals with moderate injuries. The left rear passenger in the Frontier, Sandra Martinez-Montoya, was partially ejected during the crash. She was transported to Lady of the Sea Hospital where she later died from her injuries. Montoya was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Griffin, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Lady of the Sea Hospital with minor injuries.

Alcohol use is unknown at this time. Blood was taken from both drivers and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists to always use caution when crossing or approaching an intersection. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
