TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE

Labadieville Man Dies in Three Vehicle Crash on LA 69

Shortly before 5 PM yesterday afternoon, Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a three vehicle crash on LA 69 in Assumption Parish that ended in a fatality.

The investigation revealed that a 1999 Honda Civic was traveling northbound on LA 69. The Civic was being driven by Chase Prejean (W/M age 21) of Labadieville, LA. A 1991 Lincoln Town Car was traveling northbound on LA 69 behind the Honda Civic. The Town Car was being driven by Leslie Womack (W/M age 33) of Galliano, LA. For unknown reasons, the Civic entered a right hand curve and crossed the center line. The driver of the Civic then overcorrected and began to rotate clockwise. The Civic was struck by a 2008 Freightliner (box truck) traveling southbound on LA 69. The Freightliner was being driven by Joseph Landry (W/M age 53) of Napoleonville, LA. After impacting the Civic, the Freightliner continued to travel and struck the Lincoln Town Car. Prejean, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Assumption Community Hospital where he later died. Womack, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Thibodaux Regional with minor injuries. Landry, who was wearing a seat belt, received minor injuries in the crash.

Alcohol use is unknown at this time. Routine toxicology tests are pending at the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office for Prejean. Blood was taken from Womack and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Landry submitted to a breath test and was cleared of any alcohol involvement. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
