TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE
July 29, 2012
Fatality Crash in Lafourche Parish Claims the Life of a Lockport Woman

Shortly before 9 PM last night, Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a fatality crash at the intersection of LA 3235 and LA 3162 in Lafourche Parish.

The investigation revealed that a 2001 Saturn SC was traveling south on LA 3235 approaching LA 3162. The Saturn was being driven by Dominique Barquero (W/F, age 17) of Lockport, LA. A 2008 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling north on LA 3235 approaching LA 3162. The Equinox was being driven by Clifton Sam Jr. (B/M age 44) of Scott, LA. When the Saturn reached the LA 3162 intersection, it made a left turn on LA 3162. Failing to yield to oncoming traffic, the Saturn was struck by the Equinox as the Saturn crossed the northbound lanes of LA 3235. Barquero, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Lady of the Sea Hospital with minor injuries. Sam Jr., who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Lady of the Sea Hospital with minor injuries. The right rear seat passenger in the Saturn, Ouga Saucillo (O/F, age 42) of Lockport, LA, died while in route to Lady of the Sea Hospital. Saucillo was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Investigating Troopers report that alcohol impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from both drivers and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
