TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE
August 4, 2012
Cutt Off Woman Dies in a Head-On Crash on LA 308

Around 10:30 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a three vehicle crash on LA 308 in Lafourche Parish that ended in a fatality.

The investigation revealed that a 2006 Volvo semi-tractor was traveling south on LA 308 just south of Valentine. The Volvo semi-tractor was being driven by Brian Gros (W/M age 46) of Lockport, LA. As Gros came around a curve he noticed a 2006 International semi-tractor slowing to a stop for traffic. The International semi-tractor was being driven by Mitchell Brown (W/M age 50) of Lafayette, LA. In order to avoid hitting the International semi-tractor, Gros steered to the left and enter the northbound lane of LA 308. The Volvo semi-tractor struck a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer head-on. The Lancer was being driven by Shantelle Hancock (W/F age 29) of Cut Off, LA. After the initial impact, the Lancer was pushed into the International semi-tractor. Hancock, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead on scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Gros, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. Brown, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash.

Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from Gros and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Routine toxicology tests are pending at the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office for Hancock. Brown submitted to a breath test and was cleared of any alcohol involvement. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
