Three Dead after Vehicle is Submerged in Canal on Interstate 10 in Ascension Parish Sorrento, LA – At approximately 8:30 pm on November 7, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash that occurred on Interstate 10 east of US Hwy 61 in Ascension Parish. Upon their arrival, Troopers discovered that there were four occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash. After the vehicle became submerged in a canal, only one occupant was able to escape. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as the 2003 Saturn L200 was traveling westbound on Interstate 10. For unknown reasons, the driver of the vehicle lost control and ran off the right side of the road. The vehicle struck several trees and began to overturn. The vehicle then came to rest on its roof, partially submerged in a canal. Three occupants in the vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office. A fourth occupant was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with moderate injuries. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash but a toxicology test will be conducted on the driver. Further investigation also revealed that none of the occupants in the vehicle were restrained. This crash remains under investigation as Troopers worked to identify the occupants in the vehicle and determine a cause. Anyone with information regarding the identity of the victims in this crash is encouraged to contact the Louisiana State Police Troop A at (225)754-8500. Louisiana State Troopers want to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
