TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE
January 2nd, 2012
Early morning crash results in Fatal

This morning around 2:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a one vehicle fatality crash on LA 316 near Bayou Blue Bypass Road in Gray, Louisiana. The investigation revealed that a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling south on LA 316 when it ran off the road. The driver of the vehicle attempted to regain control, but ran off the opposite side of the road. As the vehicle left the road it struck a ditch causing the vehicle to overturn. Two passengers, who were not wearing their seatbelts, were ejected from the vehicle as it overturned.

The driver of the vehicle, Corey Thibodaux (White/Male age 30) of Gray LA, was properly wearing his seatbelt and received minor injuries due to the crash. Mr. Thibodaux was transported to Thibodaux Regional because his injuries. One of the passengers in the vehicle, Vincente Cardenas (Hispanic/Male age 29) of Gray, LA, was not wearing his seatbelt, ejected from the vehicle, and then later pronounced dead at the scene. A second passenger (unidentified male), who was not wearing his seatbelt was also ejected from the vehicle. The unidentified passenger was transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center with critical injuries.

Troopers suspect impairment was a factor and as a result, blood was taken from Mr. Thibodaux. Test results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, and this crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still more room for improvement. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
