TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE February 16, 2012 Alcohol Suspected in ATV Fatality Crash Yesterday afternoon around 4 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a fatality crash on Jolimar Street by LA 1 in Assumption Parish. The investigation revealed that a 2011 Honda All Terrain Vehicle (4-wheeler) was traveling north on the southbound shoulder of LA 1 approaching Jolimar Street. The 4-wheeler was being driven by Michael Harris Sr. (B/M age 52) of Belle Rose, LA. A 2006 GMC Sierra was traveling north on LA 1 approaching Jolimar Street. The Sierra was being driven by Keith Melerine (W/M age 59) of Houma, LA. As Melerine made a turn onto Jolimar Street, Harris struck the rear driver’s door of the Sierra. Upon impact, Harris was thrown forward and his head penetrated the glass of the rear driver’s side door. Harris was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Harris was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Assumption Hospital where he died shortly after arrival. Investigating Troopers suspect that alcohol is a factor for Harris, and toxicology tests are pending. Melerine was cleared of any alcohol involvement. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind everyone to remain safe on the roads, and not to operate any form of transportation under the influence of alcohol. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police. Contact Information: Tpr.
