TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE September 7, 2012 Bicyclist Killed in Fatality Crash on LA 18 Shortly after 8 PM yesterday evening, Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a fatality crash on LA 18 in St. John the Baptist Parish. The investigation revealed that a bicycle was traveling east in the eastbound lane of LA 18 near the fog line. The bicycle was being operated by Larry Young (B/M age 76) of Edgard, LA. The bicycle was approaching East 2nd Street when it was struck from the rear by a 2009 Cadillac Escalade traveling eastbound on LA 18. The Cadillac was being driven by Paul Oubre Jr. (B/M age 66) of Vacherie, LA. Young was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. John Coroner’s Office. Oubre, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash. At the time of the crash, Young was wearing dark clothing and did not have any kind of illuminated device on his bicycle. Alcohol was a factor in the crash. Oubre, who submitted to a breath test, was found to be above the legal limit of .08g%. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Young. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. According to Louisiana State Law, bicycles must travel in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic laws. Bicycles must also have a lamp mounted on the front that shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front. They shall also have a lamp mounted on the rear that will emit either a flashing or steady red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear. Remember to wear bright and reflective clothing when walking or bicycling at night. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police. Contact Information: Tpr.
