TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE September 18, 2012 Passenger Killed in LA 308 and LA 70 Spur Crash Paincourtville, LA- Shortly after 3:30 PM this afternoon, a 53 year old Napoleonville woman was tragically killed as another vehicle ran a stop sign and struck the passenger side of the vehicle that she was sitting in. The investigation revealed that Melina Rodriguez (O/F age 63) of Raceland, LA was traveling south on LA 308 approaching the LA 70 Spur intersection. Rodriguez was driving a 1999 GMC Sierra pickup truck when she failed to stop for a stop sign and flashing red signal at the intersection. Rodriguez’s vehicle struck a 2000 Toyota Camry that was crossing the intersection from the LA 70 Spur. The Camry was being driven by Martina Llamas (O/F age 46) of Napoleonville, LA. Rodriguez, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries. Martina Llamas and Maria Lara, right rear passenger, were transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with moderate injuries. Ernestina Llamas, the front seat passenger, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office. Investigating Troopers report that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from both drivers and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind motorists to always be aware of their surroundings. Before entering or crossing an intersection, take a second to make sure that all the other vehicles are coming to a stop. Taking the time to drive defensively can mean the difference between getting in a crash and avoiding one. Troopers also stress the dangers of impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury.
