Troop A – UPDATED NEWS RELEASE November 28th, 2015 Joshua Eugene Claverie Jr., the two month old son of Joshua Eugene Claverie Sr. and Jayla Sharnikiya Danielle Young, has succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash. Two Month Old Infant Critical, Father and Mother Killed in Baton Rouge Crash Baton Rouge, LA- Shortly before 3:00 AM Saturday November 28th, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 10 near Bluebonnet Blvd. The crash claimed the life of 20 year-old Joshua Eugene Claverie and 22 year-old Jayla Sharnikiya Danielle Young. Claverie and Young are both from Baton Rouge, LA. The couple’s two month-old son is in critical condition at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. Crash scene investigators determined that a Freightliner box truck operated by 56 year-old Christopher L. Stewart of Baton Rouge, LA was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 east of Bluebonnet Blvd. Stewart pulled onto the right westbound shoulder to use his cell phone. After making a call, Stewart reentered the right lane of Interstate 10. A Ford F-150 driven by Joshua Claverie was driving westbound in the right lane. For reasons still under investigation, Claverie was unable to avoid the Freightliner and crashed into the rear of the box truck. Jayla Young was seated in the front passenger seat of the F-150. Despite being properly restrained, Young suffered severe injuries in the crash. She was pronounced deceased on scene by the East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office. Young and Claverie’s two month old son was seated in a rear facing child passenger seat in the front middle seat of the F-150. The infant suffered severe injuries in the crash and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Joshua Claverie, the driver of the F-150, was properly restrained at the time of the crash. He too suffered severe injuries in the crash and was also transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Claverie succumbed to his injuries. Christopher L. Stewart, the driver of the Freightliner, was properly restrained at the time of the crash. He suffered minor injuries in the crash. Stewart voluntarily submitted to a breath test with no trace amounts of alcohol present. The crash remains under investigation. While not every crash is a survivable, Troopers always recommend doing your part to ensure the safety of you and your passengers. Please, take the time this Thanksgiving weekend and speak to your loved ones about the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. Always wear your seatbelt, never drive impaired and eliminate distractions.
