Tennessee Man Dies after Crash Involving Three 18-Wheelers on Interstate 10 in Iberville Parish

Ramah, LA Shortly before 4:00 pm on December 1, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a three vehicle fatality crash that occurred on Interstate 10 eastbound west of Ramah (LA 3000) in Iberville Parish. The crash took the life of 42 year old Karl Lindberg of Crossville, TN.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 63 year old David Sanders of Holden, LA was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 in a 2016 Peterbuilt. Sanders came to a stop in the right lane due to traffic congestion. At the same time, 22 year old Devon White of Elyria, OH was traveling eastbound in a 2016 Freightliner. White was in the right lane behind an unknown 18-wheeler. As they approached Sanders’ vehicle, the unknown 18-wheeler swerved suddenly into the left lane. White saw Sanders’ vehicle stopped and steered to the right shoulder. The trailer of White’s vehicle sideswiped the trailer of Sanders’ vehicle. Lindberg was traveling eastbound in the right lane behind White in a 2016 Freightliner. Lindberg also steered to the right shoulder to avoid striking Sanders’ vehicle but was unsuccessful. Lindberg’s vehicle struck the trailers of both Sanders’ and White’s vehicles causing severe damage.

Lindberg sustained severe injuries in the crash and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital where he later succumbed to those injuries. Sanders and White were not injured in the crash. All drivers were properly restrained and impairment is not suspected. White and Sanders submitted to chemical breath test and showed no detectable signs of impairment. A toxicology sample will be taken from Lindberg for analysis.

Louisiana State Troopers want to inform motorists that distracted driving is one of the leading causes of crashes in our state. Distractions can be caused by cell phones, passengers, and many other things inside of our vehicles. There are many unexpected dangers on our roadways ranging from debris in our lane, to traffic coming to a sudden stop due to congestion. These are all potential hazards that we lose the ability to avoid when we drive distracted and our attention is taken away from the road. Through remaining vigilant and avoiding all distractions while behind the wheel, drivers can do their part to ensure the safety of everyone while on Louisiana roadways.
