Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE Date: September 17, 2008 Three Arrested for Looting and Theft of Petroleum Products Grand Isle- On September 13, 2008, two Louisiana State Police Troop C troopers assigned to patrol Grand Isle post Hurricane Gustav and Ike, were contacted by a citizen who witnessed a theft of fuel. The citizen told troopers he witnessed three local residents of Grand Isle stealing fuel from the Better Buy Shell Station on Grand Isle, LA. State troopers began a preliminary investigation of the incident and learned the suspects were possibly Grand Isle police officers. Troopers consulted with Grand Isle Police Chief Euris DuBois and Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand, who both requested the Louisiana State Police conduct a full investigation into the theft. On September 15, 2008, troopers interviewed the suspects during which they admitted to stealing the fuel. At the time of the incident, the suspects were not working in an official capacity for the police department. According to Chief Dubois, two of the three suspects, Patrick Santiny and Elgene Gary Jr., were commissioned auxiliary officers with the Grand Isle Police Department. All three suspects were arrested and transported to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna, LA. They were booked on charges of looting and theft of petroleum products. Troopers are continuing their investigation.
