Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: December 4, 2008 Early Morning Crash in South Lafourche Claims First Loss of Life in December Cut Off- On December 4, 2008 at approximately 3:10 AM, Troop C was notified of a fatal crash on LA 308 near East 71st Street that claimed the first loss of life for the month of December. A 2008 Chevrolet truck, driven by Manuel Toups (W/M, 39, of Galliano, LA) was traveling south on LA 308 at East 71st Street. Toups traveled left across the center line and struck a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by Patches St. Pierre (W/F, 26, of Cut Off, LA) head-on. After impact, St. Pierre's vehicle went off the southbound shoulder and came to rest in a small stand of trees. Toups' vehicle rotated clockwise, overturned, and came to rest on its roof in the roadway. A 2003 Ford Taurus, driven by Anna Billiot (W/F, 68, Golden Meadow, LA) was traveling southbound and struck the Chevrolet truck as it was coming to rest. Billiot’s vehicle came to rest on LA 308 facing south. During the initial collision between Toups' and St. Pierre's vehicles, a passenger in St. Pierre's vehicle, Shannon L. Aucoin (W/M, 32, Cut Off, LA) sustained fatal injuries. Aucoin was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Aucoin was pronounced dead at the scene by Lafourche Parish Coroner's Office. Alcohol is not suspected in the crash, however in accordance with state law; blood was drawn from each driver and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Charges in this crash are currently pending. Tpr. William Powell continues his investigation. Remember that the “Zero For December” Campaign will be running the entire month of December. This is the “Zero For December” campaign’s 8th year and Troop C has yet to actually get zero fatals in the month of December. Last year Troop C investigated 3 fatal crashes resulting in 4 deaths. Troop C troopers urge drivers to always use common sense, drive defensively, and always wear seat belts while in vehicles.
