On Saturday 3/01/08 at approximately 9:50 pm, another Terrebonne Parish pedestrian was killed on a local roadway. Neculai Popa, 51, of Romania, was riding his bicycle westbound in the westbound lane on Industrial Boulevard near North American Shipyard when he was struck by a westbound white 1999 Ford Escort. In order to get to his temporary residence on the grounds of North American Shipyard, Mr. Popa proceeded to travel diagonally across the roadway when he was struck by the Ford Escort. Mr. Popa was ejected from his bicycle. Mr. Popa was transported to Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance where he later died from injuries.

According to a witness traveling westbound on Industrial Boulevard, a bicycle was lying on the westbound shoulder and a white Ford Escort was stopped about one-half mile down the road. The witness became suspicious and called 911 after seeing the vehicle on the side of the road with a man looking at the right side of the vehicle. With the assistance of the Houma Police Department, the Ford Escort found abandoned on the shoulder approximately one-half mile west of the crash scene. The vehicle was identified as the vehicle that struck Mr. Popa. Crash scene evidence is consistent with damage to the white Ford Escort found one-half mile away from the scene. The vehicle was seized and towed by Louisiana State Police for further investigation.

The suspect driver of the Ford Escort is unknown; however, Louisiana State Police is investigating a person of interest in this case. Alcohol use is unknown for both the driver of the vehicle and Mr. Popa. A blood sample was taken from Mr. Popa and the results are pending with the Terrebonne Parish Coroners Office. Trooper Simon Besson is continuing to investigate this crash.
