| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: March 3, 2008 ****UPDATE**** ARREST MADE in Second Hit and Run Fatality On Saturday, March 1, 2008 at approximately 9:50 pm, Neculai Popa, 51, of Romania, was killed after being struck by a westbound white 1999 Ford Escort while riding his bicycle on Industrial Boulevard near North American Shipyard. On Sunday afternoon, March 2, 2008, the person of interest being investigated by troopers was confirmed, and he turned himself in to Troop C. A white male, identified as Mark Romano, 26, of Houma, LA, admitted to driving during the crash and also drinking alcoholic beverages the evening of the fatality traffic crash; however, he indicated that he was not aware that he had struck someone. He was charged and jailed at the Terrebonne Criminal Justice Complex with the following: Felony Hit and Run (Fatality), Open Container, and Expired Inspection Sticker. The Louisiana State Police would like to thank the witness who called 911 to report the suspicious activity. It is citizens like this witness who help us quickly resolve crimes of this nature.
