| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: March 20, 2008 Belle Chasse Man Killed in Three Vehicle Crash On Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 2:50 pm, a Belle Chase man was killed in a three vehicle crash on LA 1 in Lafourche Parish. The crash occurred about 1.3 miles north of the T-Bois Bridge the northern Larose, LA area.Lonnie Barthe (W/M/42 of Belle Chasse, LA) was operating a red 1999 Saturn SC2 southbound on LA 1. Barthe passed several vehicles prior to pulling in behind a southbound 1998 International flatbed truck operated by Joseph Smith (B/M/75 of Raceland, LA) and owned by Robichaux Lumber, Inc. Shortly thereafter, Barthe proceeded to unsafely pass the flatbed truck as a brown 2008 Ford F-250, operated by Jonathan Darda (I/M/26 of Larose, LA), approached northbound on LA 1. Barthe failed to return to his southbound lane and struck the northbound Ford F-250 head-on. The head-on crash took place directly in front of the lumber truck. Smith took evasive action to avoid the collision; however, he still struck the red Saturn SC2. Barthe was pronounced dead at the scene. Darda and Smith were transported with minor injuries to St. Anne Hospital by Acadian Ambulance. Barthe was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol and drug use on the part of Barthe is unknown with the results pending from the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Alcohol and drug use on the part of Darda and Smith are not suspected but results are pending from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. TFC Kevin Resweber is the investigating trooper.
