| TROOP A NEWS RELEASE December 26, 2015 Troopers Investigate Fatal Crash Involving Bicyclist on Christmas Day Springfield, LA – Shortly before 5:00 pm on December 25, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash involving a bicyclist on LA 42 west of LA 43 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 21 year old Justin Murray of Hammond, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Murray was traveling westbound on LA 42 on his bicycle. At the same time, 63 year old Keith Jones of Livingston, LA was traveling westbound on LA 42 in a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado. For unknown reasons, Murray traveled across the westbound lane of LA 42 into the path of Jones’ vehicle. Murray was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Jones was properly restrained in the crash and was not injured. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Jones submitted to a chemical breath test and showed no signs of impairment. A toxicology sample will be taken from Murray for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that Louisiana law requires a minimum distance of three feet when passing a bicycle. Bicyclist should remain as close to the right of side of the roadway as possible and are required to follow all traffic laws. Bicyclists should never assume that a motorist can see you. Simple precautions such as wearing an approved bicycle helmet, reflective materials, and avoiding distractions are key to preventing crashes and avoiding injuries. Contact Information: | |||
