Be Mindful Where Roadside Floats are Parked During Carnival Season
January 7, 2008

Mardi Gras falls very early this year and soon we will all begin to see the roadside floats appearing alongside the highways preparing for the upcoming 2008 Carnival Season. The number of roadside floats and stands has grown to be very popular in recent years; however, many of the roadside floats and stands that are set up on or near the highway edge are not properly parked.

According to the Terrebonne Parish Planning, Zoning, and Permit Office, the permit is needed to put the roadside float along the parade route and it requires the float or stand to be parked on private property only. The roadside float cannot be placed on any right of way whether it is along a State highway or Parish road right of way. The Terrebonne Parish Permits Office assured that Permit Inspectors will be out throughout the Carnival Season inspecting these floats to ensure they are properly parked.

Your Troop C Troopers would like to remind you to remember that motorists traveling the roadways need to be able to travel the roadways during the Carnival Season just as easily as any other time of the year. Captain Val Penouilh, Commander of Louisiana State Police Troop C, stated, “If Troop C receives any complaints concerning a roadside float blocking the view or that is dangerous to the flow of traffic, a Trooper will be assigned to investigate the issue. If the Trooper determines the float is a hazard to traffic, the Trooper will have the float removed immediately.”

Just remember two key words when looking to park your roadside float, PRIVATE PROPERTY. Oh and don’t forget to make sure you have permission from the owner of the property in which you intend to park upon. For any questions concerning where to park your roadside float, call your parish’s permit office.
