Motorcycle Crash in Pointe-Aux-Chenes, LA Kills Metairie Man

February 9, 2008

On February 9, 2008 at approximately 6:35 pm, a motorcycle ran off the road in Pointe-Aux-Chenes, LA and struck a tree in Terrebonne Parish. The operator of the motorcycle died on the way to the hospital.

Kevin J. Hughes, 48, of Metairie, LA, was traveling north on LA 665 on his 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Hughes entered and failed to properly negotiate a left hand curve. Hughes' motorcycle then left the roadway to the right. Once Hughes' motorcycle left the roadway, it traveled a short distance and struck a tree. Upon impact with the tree, Kevin Hughes was ejected from the motorcycle. Hughes struck the ground and traveled a short distance before coming to rest.

Kevin Hughes was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but the helmet was not DOT approved. According to Louisiana law, a helmet must be DOT approved to be within the parameter of the statute.

Hughes was airlifted by Acadian Ambulance Air-Med to Chabert Medical Center. Hughes died en route to the hospital from injuries suffered in the crash.

Alcohol use is unknown at this time. However, a blood sample will be taken from Hughes by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner's Office for analysis. This crash remains under investigation by TFC Keith Redmond.
