| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: June 20, 2008 Man Arrested in Thibodaux for “Medical Marijuana” On June 18, 2008, Troopers with the Louisiana State Police/West District Narcotics/Houma Office were contacted by the Mendocino Major Crimes Task Force in Ukiah, CA about a large amount of marijuana that was discovered at a private delivery service destined for 2316 St. Bernard Rd. Apt. E in Thibodaux, LA. The package contained three large bags of marijuana addressed to Matthew Zugsberger. Troopers agreed to take delivery of the marijuana in an attempt to further the investigation. On June 19, 2008, Troopers, with the assistance of the Thibodaux Police Department, received the shipment of marijuana from California and conducted an undercover operation against Zugsberger. During the operation, the two agencies served a search warrant at Zugsberger’s residence. Inside the residence, Troopers discovered approximately 951 grams (2.12 pounds) of marijuana in Zugsberger’s possession. This amount includes the 934 grams of marijuana initially discovered in California. Zugsberger admitted that he paid $6000.00 per pound for the marijuana that appeared to be very high quality with a much higher THC content. In addition to the marijuana, Troopers also discovered 11 grams of hashish oil and $4640.00 in US currency in Zugsberger’s possession. Another subject, Michael Mahoney, was at the residence at the time of the search warrant. Troopers found that Mahoney was in possession of approximately one gram of marijuana. Zugsberger was arrested for Possession With Intent to Distribute a Schedule I CDS (Marijuana), Possession of a Schedule I CDS (Hashish) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Mahoney was arrested and released on summons for Possession of Marijuana. Zugsberger was booked at the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. Zugsberger claimed to have a medical marijuana license from California. However, the California Medical Marijuana License is only valid in California and only allows patients to possess small amounts of the substance. Troopers would like to remind the public that Louisiana does not have a medical marijuana law and that possession of any amount of marijuana is punishable by at least six months in jail and a fine of up to $500.00 for the first misdemeanor offense. The public can report suspected illegal activity to Louisiana State Police Troop C at (800) 659-5907 or to the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division at (985) 876-8834.
