| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: May 10, 2008 Two Motorcycles Collide in Terrebonne Parish Killing One On Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 1:52 pm, Troop C investigated a two motorcycle single fatality crash on LA 24 North (West Park Ave.) at the Elgin Street Bridge in Terrebonne Parish. Robert Doggett (W/M, 54, of Gray, LA) was riding his 2006 Yamaha Stratoliner motorcycle northbound on LA 24 North in the inside lane. He was traveling slightly ahead and to the right of his wife, Bonnie Doggett (W/F, 61, of Gray, LA), who was riding her 2007 Harley Davidson 1200XL Sportster. Robert Doggett proceeded to make a left turn onto the Elgin Street Bridge when Bonnie Doggett locked up her front tire and skidded into her husband’s motorcycle. Both of them were ejected and were wearing novelty, non-DOT approved helmets. Bonnie Doggett sustained head injuries and was transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center in critical condition where she later died. Robert Doggett sustained minor injuries. Alcohol-use is suspected with results pending analysis. TFC Chris Celestin is continuing his investigation. NOTE: According to Louisiana law, motorcycle operators are required to wear a DOT approved helmet. Many of the citizens in the community that ride motorcycles have been riding with a novelty helmet only. Not only are these helmets against the law, but they are not safe. These helmets are thin and can’t withstand the impact sustained in a crash. Every motorcycle operator in our community needs to do their part and wear the proper equipment to ensure their safety. State Police troopers will do their part to take enforcement action on anyone seen without a DOT approved helmet.
