The crash left a 17 year old Larose teen in critical condition. Benny Smith III (W/M, 17 of Larose, LA) was operating a 2003 Chevrolet pickup northbound on LA 308 in Lockport, LA when, for unknown reasons, Smith crossed the centerline into the southbound lane striking a 2010 Peterbilt 18-wheeler. The 18-wheeler was driven by Calvin Booker (B/M, 30 of New Iberia, LA). Booker attempted to take evasive action to the right to avoid the collision, but contact was still made. Smith’s vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane, and Booker’s vehicle came to rest on the banks of Bayou Lafourche. Smith, who was wearing his seat belt, received critical injuries and had to be extricated from his vehicle. Smith was then transported to Lady of the Sea Hospital by South Lafourche Ambulance. Booker, who was wearing his seat belt, received minor injuries and was transported to Lady of the Sea Hospital by South Lafourche Ambulance, but was later released. Alcohol is not suspected in the crash; however, as per state law, blood samples were taken from both drivers and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Troopers are still continuing their investigation.
