Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: February 27, 2010 Fatal Crash in Lafourche Parish Claims the Life of a 33 year old Galliano Man Lafourche – On February 27, 2010, at approximately 8:55 a.m. Troop C investigated a two vehicle crash on LA 24, approximately five miles west of LA 3235 in Lafourche Parish. The crash claimed the life of a 33 year old Galliano man. Charlie Ruffin (B/M, 53 of Houma, LA) was operating a 2007 International 18-wheeler, belonging to SONOCO of Houma, LA. Ruffin was westbound on LA 24 in Larose, LA. when he apparently fell asleep. Ruffin crossed the centerline into the eastbound lane and struck a 2006 Dodge pickup, driven by Leon A. Charpentier (W/M, 33 of Galliano, LA.) head on. Charpentier attempted to take evasive action by driving onto the eastbound shoulder but, could not avoid the crash. After impact, both vehicles continued off the eastbound shoulder into a wooded area. Ruffin, who was wearing his seat belt, received minor injuries. Charpentier, who was wearing his seat belt, received fatal injuries. Ruffin was transported to Terrebonne Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance. Charpentier was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. The involvement of alcohol and /or drug usage is not suspected in the crash. Blood results are pending at this time from the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office and Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Troopers are still continuing their investigation and charges are pending.
