Texas Man Arrested after Fatal Crash on Whiskey Bay

Ramah, LA – Shortly after 4:00 am on December 19, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash on Interstate 10 westbound west of Ramah in Iberville Parish. The crash took the life of 25 year old Martin Zamarripa Jr. of San Benito, TX. The crash also resulted in the arrest of 24 year old Juan Fernandez Jr. of Donna, TX.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Fernandez was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 in a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado. At the same time, 53 year old Lawford Domineck of Baton Rouge, LA was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 in a 2010 International 18-wheeler. Fernandez was traveling at a high rate of speed as he approached Domineck’s vehicle. Fernandez attempted to steer left around Domineck’s vehicle and struck the rear left side of the 18-wheeler with the front right side of his vehicle. The impact caused Fernandez’s vehicle to rotate clockwise and strike the guardrails multiple times.

Zamarripa was a passenger in Fernandez’s vehicle and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office. Fernandez was not properly restrained and sustained moderate injuries in the crash. Domineck was properly restrained and was not injured.

During the course of their investigation, Troopers determined that Fernandez was impaired. Troopers placed Fernandez under arrest and he was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital for treatment. This afternoon, Fernandez was released from the hospital and Troopers booked him into the Iberville Parish Jail for Vehicular Homicide, DWI, Reckless Operation, Open Container, and No Seat Belt.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
