Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: February 14, 2009 Terrebonne Parish Crash Claims Life of a 5 Year Old Mississippi Boy and Injures Others Dularge- A five year old child from Mississippi was killed on Friday evening just before 7:00 PM after the vehicle he was being transported in went off the roadway and struck a culvert in Terrebonne Parish. A 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante, driven by Murphy Babin IV (W/M, 20, of 3203 Mallalieau Road, Ruth, MS), was southbound on La 315 in the Dularge Community. The driver steered the vehicle across the centerline and exited the northbound travel lane. The vehicle then traveled into a ditch where it struck a culvert, rotated clockwise, and came to rest in the ditch facing west. Based on physical evidence and statements from first responders, no one in the vehicle was wearing their seat belts. Murphy Babin IV was critically injured and was transported to Terrebonne General Hospital. The front seat passenger, Tiffany Champange (W/F, 24, of 3311 Mallalieau Road, Ruth, MS) received moderate to severe injuries in the crash. She was the owner of the vehicle and mother of the deceased. The right rear passenger was an 11 year old female (also from Ruth, MS) received severe injuries and was transported to Chabert Medical Center. The left rear passenger was a 5 year old male (also from Ruth, MS) who was fatally injured in the crash. He was pronounced dead on scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner's Office. Alcohol is suspected on behalf of Murphy Babin IV and blood analysis results are pending from the LSP Crime Lab in Baton Rouge. The investigation is ongoing by S/T Clifton Dupre.
