Remember School Zone and School Bus Safety

The school year for 2010-2011 has begun in the Troop C area. The Louisiana State Police wants to remind motorists to drive with care, and be especially aware of speed limits in school zones, school buses loading and/or unloading, and children walking and/or biking to school. Motorist and parents must be aware of the laws regarding school zones and school buses. Troopers will be patrolling school zones and speeding will not be tolerated while the school zone speed limits are in effect. Most school zones have a reduced speed limit in effect from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm; however, there are some zones that are marked with slightly different times and it is the responsibility of the motorist to be aware of these speed zones.

In addition to the speed zones, the motoring public needs to be on the lookout for school buses loading and/or unloading children. If a school bus is stopped for this purpose, and has its stop signs and red lights on, motorists must stop not less than thirty feet from the bus and wait for the lights to be turned off before proceeding. Never pass a school bus which is stopped to pick-up and/or drop-off a child. A school bus driver can report any violation of this law. The fines for this violation can be substantial and your driver's license may be suspended.

Motorists traveling the roadways during peak school traffic hours should expect traffic congestion and possible delays near school zones. It is important for each driver to be patient with the increased traffic and allow extra time to arrive safely at their destination.
