Troop C Reports Sixteen DWI Arrest during the Memorial Holiday

Gray- Louisiana State Police Troop C reminds everyone to make sure safety is the number one thought during the summer months. The Memorial Day weekend marks the official beginning of summer. Troop C, Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes District Attorney’s Offices, and other Local Law Enforcement agencies had increased enforcement during this holiday weekend and implemented the “No Refusal” Memorial Holiday.

Crashes involving serious injuries and fatalities historically are attributed to impaired drivers during holiday weekends. Holidays are a time for fun and sometimes can lead to consuming substances that cause impaired driving. On Memorial Day weekend, we honor those who gave their lives for our country. Troop C troopers were out in full force this entire Memorial Holiday to ensure the safety of everyone as they traveled to their destinations. From Friday, May 28, 2010, at 6:00 p.m. to Monday, May 31, 2010, at 12:00 a.m. Troop C made sixteen DWI arrest. Of the sixteen arrests, eleven were in Terrebonne parish and five were in Lafourche Parish. Last year for the Memorial Holiday weekend, Troop C made twenty-three DWI arrests.

The reason for implementing the “No Refusal” Memorial Holiday is based on the nationwide trend during certain holiday periods when alcohol consumption increases, such as Memorial Day, July Fourth, Mardi Gras, Labor Day, etc. This has been addressed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and others in both advertising, public information campaigns, in high intensity patrol, and checkpoint programs. The loss of life associated with impaired drivers causes a tremendous amount of grief to survivor’s for the remainder of their lives. To combat this trend and reduce the number of injuries and fatalities caused by impaired drivers, Troop C and other law enforcement agencies will continue to implement the “No Refusal” initiative.
