Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: May 7, 2009 Galliano Man Dies After Striking 18-Wheeler Head-On in Southern Lafourche Parish Leeville- A 27 year old Galliano man died after colliding his pickup truck head-on with an 18-wheeler on LA 1 south of Golden Meadow near Leeville. A 2004 Dodge Ram, driven by Nicholas Cheramie (W/M, 27, of Galliano, LA), was northbound on LA 1, when for unknown reasons, the Dodge crossed the center line and struck a southbound tractor trailer in the southbound lane. The tractor trailer was a 2004 International 9400i, driven by Casey Caudill (W/M, 25, of Morgan City, LA), and was transporting a 10 ton, 500 Kw generator on a flatbed trailer. After impact, the International traveled off of the southbound shoulder and came to rest in a small marshy bayou. The generator detached from the flatbed trailer and came to rest in the small bayou south of the International. After impact, the Dodge rotated clockwise and came to rest in the northbound lane facing east. Cheramie was wearing his seat belt, and sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Alcohol/drug use is unknown pending analysis from the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Caudill was wearing his seat belt, sustained minor injuries, and was transported to Lady of the Sea Hospital. Alcohol/ drug use is not suspected on Caudill; however, blood was taken and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. A large amount of diesel fuel was spilled covered the roadway and marshy area around the crash, which closed LA 1 for over five hours.
