Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: February 23, 2009 Raceland Crash Critically Injures Passenger Raceland- Yesterday evening, a passenger in a Dodge Ram was ejected and critically wounded after the Dodge he was riding in sideswiped a vehicle on US 90 in Lafourche Parish. A 1997 Dodge Ram, driven by Ernesto Ruiz (H/M, 42, residing in Tickfaw, LA) was traveling west in the outside lane of US 90 on top the LA 182 overpass. The Dodge entered the inside lane sideswiping a westbound 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Terry Poche (W/M, 58, of Houma, LA). Ruiz then steered to the right causing his Dodge to rotate clockwise until it overturned ejecting his passenger, Luna Omberto (H/M, resident of Tickfaw, LA). Omberto sustained critical injuries and was transported to St. Anne Hospital in Raceland and later transferred to Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge. Ruiz and a third occupant, Carlos Alfaro (H/M, 23, resident of Tickfaw, LA), both sustained minor injuries and were transported to Terrebonne General Hospital by Acadian Ambulance. Blood was drawn from Ruiz and sent to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis. Alcohol is not suspected. Upon his release, Ruiz was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center and charged with improper lane usage, unlicensed driver, operating a vehicle without lawful presence in the United States, and a seat belt violation. Poche was not injured and was transported to Troop C. There, he submitted to a breath test with results of .000 g% indicating no alcohol. S/T Kirk Foret is continuing his investigation.
