Thursday, May 21, 2009, Troop C and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will partner for a seat belt checkpoint on LA 1 south of Lockport from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Friday, May 22, 2009, Troop C and the Houma Police Department will conduct a seat belt checkpoint on LA 24 near the Morgan Street Bridge in Houma.

Captain Darrin Naquin, Commander of Louisiana State Police Troop C, stated, “The joint effort of Troop C troopers and our local law enforcement partners conducting these weeklong series of checkpoints creates a greater awareness of the importance of seat belt use. This effort will ensure that this year’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign is more visible and stronger than ever.”

In May of 2008, nineteen (19) citizens lost their lives in crashes in the Troop C area. Nine (9) of the 19 people killed were not wearing their seat belt when the crash occurred. Seven (7) were wearing their seat belt, and the remaining two (2) were on motorcycles. One motorcycle occupant was wearing a non-DOT approved helmet, and the other was not wearing a helmet at all. One life lost is too many, so lets all work together by buckling up to ensure that May of 2008 was a month that our community never experiences again. Troop C is committed to saving lives, and will continue to aggressively enforce Louisiana’s seat belt laws.
