TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE October 3, 2015 Motorcyclist Dies in Two Vehicle Crash in Livingston Parish Denham Springs, LA – At approximately 8:00 pm on October 2, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle crash involving a motorcycle that occurred on LA 1019 north of LA 64 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 20 year old Patrick Dodson of Denham Springs, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Dodson was driving a 2013 Kawasaki motorcycle southbound on LA 1019. Dodson failed to safely negotiate a curve to the right and crossed the center line into the northbound lane. At the same time, 49 year old James Stutzman Jr. of Denham Springs, LA was traveling northbound on LA 1019. Dodson struck Stutzman’s vehicle head-on in the northbound lane ejecting him from his motorcycle. Despite the fact that Dodson was wearing a US DOT approved safety helmet, he suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Dodson was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office. A toxicology sample will be taken from Dodson and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Troopers also discovered that Dodson did not have a valid motorcycle endorsement. Stutzman was properly restrained in the crash and was not injured. Stutzman submitted to a chemical breath test and showed no detectable signs of impairment. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorcyclists that Louisiana law requires that a DOT approved helmet must be worn while operating a motorcycle on Louisiana highways. Riders must also possess a valid motorcycle endorsement. Troopers also encourage all riders to take an approved motorcycle safety course. These courses teach safe riding practices and help you apply safe riding strategies that can help reduce your chance of injury should a crash occur. Always stay within you skill limits. Making good choices while riding a motorcycle, such as obeying all traffic laws and never driving while impaired, can often mean the difference between life and death.
